The type of wood, glass efficiencies, quality, style and finishing options of exterior french doors is almost endless. Glass stops can be shaker style, shaker single or double reveal, ovolo, ogee, or modified ogee. Thickness can be 1 3/4" or 2 1/4" Jambs can be paint grade, stain grade to match the doors or paint grade to match the house trim. Both have their advantages. Solid wood doors are great if you have dogs, cats or kids that scratch. Engineered doors are great if the atmosphere is going to have extremes of temperature and humidity particularly on overhight doors. Style is the next decision. The two most common are ovolo or shaker style glass stops. Typically french doors swing out to provide what we call the Hawaiian lanai look, where when the doors are fully opened, they disappear against the wall and create a wide open space between in and out doors. In the example here, the room is large enough that the doors do not interfere with inside spaces, and furniture placement. These particular doors are the least expensive the wood french door line. They are made by Simpson Door, a large high quality american door manufacturer with a great warranty. There are ovolo stops on the glass which technically provide better water shedding than a shaker door, something to consider if they will get soaking wet. They are engineered which means a veneer over top of a wood core, so we recommend as always extreme efforts when finishing. ALways use a penetrating stain, and then a polyurethane clear coat on all six sides of the door ensuring the poly penetrates any place that air or water could get in between the glass and the wood, particularly on the top and bottom of the door.
