The shim shown in this picture looks more like a top to bottom spacer. This should not be used. Shims should be bevelled and placed from either side of the door frame, so the frame tighens into place the further the shims are driven into the wall.

Stop applied jamb is used in commercial projects where the wall thickness may vary to many different widths and heights. It is also the prefered material for paint grade architecural profiles as it is easy to fabricate and finish.
